About Dr Lady Phyll
True leadership isn’t about standing in the spotlight—it’s about lighting the way for others.
Lady Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is a political activist, speaker, and advocate renowned for her work in racial, gender, and LGBTQ+ equality. As the co-founder of UK Black Pride and Executive Director of Kaleidoscope Trust, she has spent decades fighting for justice, equity, and the protection of marginalised communities. A respected thought leader, Lady Phyll is also a columnist for DIVA magazine, the leading publication for LGBTQI+ women and non-binary people.
A Career Rooted in Advocacy
Phyll began her career as a civil servant, working for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Fraud Investigation Service, where she spent almost 13 years as an Executive Officer. Her passion for justice led her to the Public and Commercial Services Trade Union (PCS), where she held multiple roles, eventually becoming Head of Political Campaigns and Equality. She also served on the TUC Race Relations Committee, amplifying voices often ignored in mainstream politics.
In 2005, Phyll co-founded UK Black Pride, which has since grown into Europe’s largest celebration for LGBTQ+ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American, and Middle Eastern descent. More than an event, it is a movement—a safe space that empowers, uplifts, and celebrates diverse identities, cultures, and histories.
As Executive Director of Kaleidoscope Trust, Phyll leads efforts to advance LGBTQ+ rights globally, working with governments, activists, and civil society organisations to ensure a world where everyone can live freely and safely.
